There I was sitting in the doctor’s office, this time with an acute ache in my left ear, the ear which was now almost completely deaf. But how was I to know that the thick gel from a garlic oil capsule couldn’t be used in place of freshly made garlic oil? In my attempt to quell a worsening ear infection, I had been applying my home-made remedy to my ear for 3 days now and the doctor was soon to tell me that the green paste had solidified over my eardrum and he would have to vacuum it out. My ear wasn’t working but my nose certainly was, and I was quickly realising that the latest brand of natural deodorant I’d bought wasn’t working for me either! Was this really deodorant number 5 now?
It was in the baking tropics of Far North Queensland, in Laura’s hometown of Port Douglas that we began our journey towards better health and wellness. Laura went on wild coconut fasting escapades and I had the above mentioned ‘garlic in ear’ fiasco, among quitting sugar and saying farewell to meat. One of Laura’s work friends was diagnosed with a skin melanoma at the time and was told by her specialist to avoid all products with SLS in them. So as the naturally curious beings we are, we went home and checked our own skincare products. Low and behold, SLS or sodium laurel sulphate was in ALL of them (bar our conditioner, which still had loads of other nasties in it).
Just like mum’s home cooking, the magic happened in the kitchen. I would scribble formulas in a creative frenzy while Laura carefully crafted away mixing and melting. It had to be 100% natural, entirely vegan (no beeswax or animal fats), completely eco-friendly and, most importantly, it had to actually work!
Each deodorant formula got the same rigorous trial we dubbed the “stink-test”. With an early morning application of our new tester deodorant, we would push it to the limits with as many as three runs. We’d then sleep in it (without showering, gross I know!), wake up and go on a final long sweaty jog to see which deodorant would make the cut.
We lost track of how many versions we trialled, but 4-months later we were super fit and guess what, we finally had a deodorant that actually worked, even on me!
Pit Putty was born, aptly named by Laura, christening our new brand with her usual her Aussie humour and charm.
We immersed ourselves in everything natural, eventually coming up with a small range of products which were so different from anything else we’d seen! We excitedly passed them on to our friends and family, who soon asked for more; thumbs up!
While we no longer work in our kitchen, every batch is still made by hand, in house and with the values we still hold. We’ve sourced premium, natural and sustainably sourced ingredients from around the world, and are still fully committed to making natural products, that our family and yours can enjoy with confidence.
With the arrival of our son, aptly named Wilder, who arrived in middle of the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, the need to provide natural products safe for the whole family to use is a calling we’re as passionate as ever about. We’re still creating our own skincare (much of which will be available to you soon!), discovering new botanicals and living our adventure every day.
Whether you’re on the start of your journey or further along, lets journey together.
