Why are aluminium deodorants bad for you?

Aluminium Salts are a key ingredient in antiperspirants because they block your sweat glands, preventing them from producing sweat. Now we don’t know about you, but we’ve never known blocked pores to be a good thing? 

Supermarket antiperspirants use aluminium ingredients as they’re a cheap and effective way to change your body's natural perspiration process, but we can’t stress enough that sweat is not the enemy, and it’s actually good for you - so much so we’ve even written a blog about it!

What does an aluminium free deodorant mean?

Why is it better to use an aluminium free deodorant?

Embracing a more natural product lifestyle is the main reason we created Pit Putty, after one of our friends was diagnosed with a skin melanoma. She was told by her specialists to avoid products with Sodium Lauryl Sulphate in them, and being naturally curious, we had a look at our own skincare products to discover that SLS was in so many of our products, alongside numerous other nasties, including Aluminium Salts.

Peer reviewed publications have also suggested that exposure to aluminium could have potentially negative health consequences, including an increased risk of breast cancer. (ref)

We just feel much more comfortable using a product that is 100% natural, using ingredients that are beneficial to our bodies, and doesn’t block our underarms from doing something that’s only natural.

Do aluminium free deodorants work? 

Absolutely! Although it may take up to a week for your pits to get used to your Pit Putty, in our experience, after that time you’ll notice you won’t sweat as much, and you’ll be feeling fresh all day long. 

Pit Putty won’t stop you from sweating completely, as it doesn’t clog your glands like antiperspirants will, but using arrowroot powder to absorb any mild sweating certainly helps, and our antibacterial ingredients, along with our plant based oils, will help with any body odour too - a win win! 

Wait a minute…your tins are aluminium?! 

That’s true! But our tins are made from aluminium alloy, which is very different to the aluminium salts found in antiperspirants. It’s commonly used in packaging because it’s durable, lightweight, recyclable and completely safe! 

Our natural deodorant is still completely aluminium free, as it doesn’t contain any synthetic nasties, including aluminium salts.
